the world's Largest show of contemporary art, the Venice Biennale, this season will be held from may 9 to November 22. Organizers have increased the duration of a month, citing the unprecedented interest of the public - last year more than 130 exhibitions of the Biennale was visited by over 500 thousand people. Their national mission in 2015 there will open 80 countries and Russia in the permanent pavilion Alexey Shchusev debuting female artist-conceptualist Irina Nakhova. In anticipation of the opening of the exhibition on the production , "women's team" Russia and conceptualism, "the Ribbon.Roo" said the Commissioner of the pavilion, the head of the Moscow exhibition of Stella Art Foundation and collector Stella Kesaeva.
"Tape.: As this season has passed the selection of the curator, the artist?
Stella Kesaeva: This is always a difficult choice. As soon as one of the Biennale, immediately start thinking about the next one. But ever since Russia in Venice did not represent the woman, we decided to stay at Irina Nakhova, the master of total installations, largely only in our country. She invited curator, wanted to work with Margarita Tupitsyn. I think this is a very correct choice. So we have created the women's team this year.
It's not quite a typical situation is when an artist chooses a curator.
I always assume that the artist must be comfortable working with a curator. Because otherwise, if there is a conflict of interest, the exhibition will not work. I biennial experience for six years, and I can confidently say that no other way. We need an agreement between the Commissioner, curator, artist. Not that I want the curator of this, and you, the artist, will work with those whom I will appoint. No. Only consistency can get a good result.
For you the figure of the artist Nakhova when and why?
Irina Nehawu I learned, when I started the Moscow conceptualism, and her work made a strong impression on me. Her installation "shower", "Coat" and many other incredible! They are read immediately understandable to everyone. And in General she is an extraordinary person with an amazing world in which he lives.
When in July we invited Irina, I immediately asked to make a few suggestions on the project. From them we chose and discussed. The project is called "Green pavilion". What will be inside, not able to tell you now, because every artist is always trying a little privacy, to preserve a certain mystery to the opening. Why "Green pavilion"? Because we decided to repaint the pavilion in its original green color. As it was conceived Shchusev. And he was at the opening in 1914. With balustrades, with monograms. As the box. We faced many bureaucratic obstacles, because you can't just repaint in green, we were forbidden by the authorities of Venice. Had to make false walls on all facades. In General, a lot of work.
Yes. Each room will represent individual phases of the Nakhova. Those projects that lived in her head, but she hasn't done.
Today you are called chief propagandist of Russian conceptualism in the world. But the activity of your Fund and the personal collection began with photography and pop art, the more popular trends in art. As you are interested in conceptualism?
In Moscow, we first made an exhibition of Warhol, Basquiat and Wesselmann, to declare itself. As I poured into the capital's art life, acquainted with Russian artists, went through the galleries, I realized that I like this direction. Because it makes you think. And Russian conceptualists not like anyone, they are unique.
Your appointment as the Commissioner of the Russian pavilion at the art Biennale expires this year. Enjoyed this job?
I like it very much! It's a huge responsibility when you represent Russia; huge moral and material, of course, load. If the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation allocates insufficient funds, you want to conform to an international level and not to strike in a dirt the person. We are also investing their money. And this is an ongoing work. The staff worked and left. And I constantly think about everything, the process does not stop. Sick - I think the children are involved - think about it. And nowhere on it does not go anywhere.
It seems that last year the Minister of culture was quite skeptical at the opening of the pavilion?
No. Medina came to us in the pavilion, and he really enjoyed it. He is generally skeptical of contemporary art. Just untrained person need to properly present and explain what it means by what he sees around. And when we explained to him that means all of this installation, he was delighted with the idea. Conceptual art is impossible to bring down in one heap, you need to put it very tactfully, measured, and small portions, as is done, for example, at the MOMA in new York.
I am grateful that the Minister has supported the allocation in 2013 a large sum of money on an expensive project "Danae" of Vadim Zakharov. Then for the first time at the Russian pavilion was spent about 24 million roubles of public funds.
Today, when everything seems to be defined, I thought, what the artist would be well to inform the next Biennale?
No, no . You can not ask me, because I don't want to think about it. Let the next Commissioner will think about it.
Do you think that after conceptualism, is there any other kind of direction, which will take place in art history?
Honestly? I think - no. I think that is the most important issue after Malevich and the Russian avant-garde. And just as the avant-garde, it will be included in the history of Russia.
